| Prompted by his two children, Steven and Shannon, who first saw the "We've Got Your Back" information on a Nickelodeon web site, Tom Doyle got the word out on short notice that the DSNY Emerald Society would be collecting backpacks filled with school supplies to send to the children who were affected by Hurricane Katrina. Backpacks were accepted at any of the seven NYC Sanitation Borough Offices and were then collected on Friday September 23, 2005 by DSNY Emerald Society members. On Saturday September 24, 2005 over 250 backpacks were delivered to the drop site in Manhattan run by boostmobilerockcorps.org. It is a small gesture from the employees of the NYC Department of Sanitation that can make a big difference to the children affected by this disaster. | ||||||||||||||
| A special thanks goes out to Brooklyn South 10 for their quick and generous response and to the men and women assigned to Manhattan East 3 who not only donated generously but also volunteered to assist in delivering the backpacks to the drop site. | ||||||||||||||
| We were later informed that over 20,000 backpacks were collected from the New York area. This is an overwhelming and commendable gesture that was started by the school children of Texas. | ||||||||||||||
